Ritam Banerjee
Ritam Banerjee describes his work of a decade as turning negatives into positives. He takes life as it comes – straight up!
His 2009 calendar is extremely special to him because this he has done something for himself. He has aptly named his calendar – ‘One man. One life. Seven ages’ after being inspired from Shakespeare’s ‘As you like it’.
This would have been a normal project except for the fact that he got Barry John himself to portray the seven stages of a man’s life. Portraying 63 year old Barry as an infant, a school boy, adolescent, warrior, an established businessman, an old man and finally a man who is 100 years old, san eyes, san ears…
Shot in two days, a very cramped studio space, Barry compares Ritam’s work to that of Satyajit Ray – now that’s a compliment if there ever was one!
To quote Ritam, “The canvas is as stark and dramatic as the coarseness of life. So take it, as you like it..." |
Ranjit Makkuni
Ranjit Makkuni, a multimedia visionary, designer and a musician explores his talents to bring out the story, principles, life and times of Gandhiji.
The work is permanently displayed in Gandhi Smriti Multimedia Museum. His work of art combines photography, sculpture, audio visuals, music...together with computers, sensors and tactile interfaces to create interactive installations.
Makkuni fondly calls his work "Cultural Computing". Ranjit Makkuni's work aims to bridge the technology divide by breaking the conventional form factors of a computer.
He believes in giving them any shape, form and making these interactive to the extent that anybody and everybody feels at home to touch, feel, use and learn from it.
He would like to use his installations to further the cause of research, preserve the social and cultural values of a society by using futuristic technology with traditional art forms.
At the Gandhi Museum, using different installations and techniques - Gandhiji's principles on Truth, Satyagraha, Freedom Movement, Charkha, Salt March, Unity of Religions are given physical forms that imbibe these messages, in unusual manner. Visitors can interact with each of the installations to learn and understand the Gandhian values and beliefs.
It is a way of reviving and conveying Gandhian traditions, values - using a form of communication, technology and tool that is relevant for today's generation. |
Anu Malhotra
Popularly known for her work in ‘Incredible India’, Anu Malhotra is a multi faceted personality and one of India’s top Directors and documentary film maker and winner of over 15 national and International awards. Anu has travelled the length and breadth of India to do various work of films like ‘The Konyak of Nagaland’, ‘The Maharaja of Jodhpur – the legacy lives on’, ‘The Apatani of Arunachal Pradesh’… some of the cultures of the tribes that she has filmed do not exist anymore.
She proudly says that she does not choose a subject to film, the subject chooses her. Well, that just might be because this time she is making a documentary on Shamans who communicate with the spirit world. To tell her story, she wraps it around the entire cultural aspect of Kullu Manali to get a better understanding of her subjects. One of the main reasons… is to preserve its rich heritage for future generations. Kullu valley is famous for its unusual Dussehra Celebrations. More traditionally, over two hundred deities converge on Kullu to pay homage to Lord Raghunathji while Music and colour fill the "Silver Valley" and it’s a 7 day celebration. To cover this in a documentary format is a mammoth task.
Her endeavor is to film the entire culture in a way for future generations to interpret it in exactly the way it is, and at the same time to treat it with the reverence that it deserves. This kind of film needs a lot more than knowing your script and you camera techniques. It requires getting to know the people… And like everything she does, Anu has become a part of her film. |
Ajay Talwar
Ajay Talwar is an astronomer, he travels with his telescope and all the photographic gear all over India to dark locations to shoot pictures of the night sky. He has even handmade many a telescopes.
The 20" is the largest telescope made by any amateur astronomer in India and is christened 'USB' meaning 'Us Se Badi' (roughly translated as 'bigger than that'). Ajay suffers from a serious case of incurable aperture fever and is planning to build a 40 incher telescope for SPACE soon.
Ajay loves to watch eclipses, both Solar and Lunar with binoculars, while his automated jig does the photographing part.
He is the President of Eclipse Chasers Athenæum, the eclipse sphere of SPACE. He is also the Head of Instrumentation & Observation, SPACE. |
Shreya
Shreya is an 11 year old amateur photographer whose interest in photography started with her mother gifting her a Canon compact camera at the age of four. Since then, Sherya has been exploring the world through the lens by capturing various subjects. From portraits to architecture to landscapes and now the sun, the moon and the stars.
She was greatly inspired by the star trails that she saw in various astronomy books and decided to board the Solar Flight 2009 to capture the moment when the sun met the moon.
Her love for photography also translates into paints as she has put up several exhibitions. Her latest work also included the brilliant diamond ring that she captured from the flight.
At this young age, one can already see a spark in the world of art. | | | |
