Varun Gogia is a 28 year old living in Deonar, Mumbai with his family. In a city where people wage wars to have their own space, Varun has his own room in a row house, far from the maddening crowd.

Life would have been perfect if not for the recession 15 years ago, where the family went from a life of luxury to frugality.

For 15 years Varun and his older sister Vidhi shared a room simply because the family could not afford more than one air conditioner in the house. With his sister married and gone, Varun now has the opportunity to have a room that is his own.

About the Room

For Varun's room a design which he wouldn't normally conceive himself but yet have it be something that he would want if he could conceive it, was needed. Color and the brief dictated the first responses: change the Color, brighten and expand the room by making it more positive.

Varun is a muscle car junkie and loves his Mustang GTs and his Shelbys and he's very inspired by this collection of cars that he has. Hence, his bed was inspired by car detailing and hence a silver duco for his bed was chosen. The head board has pleats but the central portion of the head board is inspired by car seating. The criss- cross detail is picked up from one of the mustang GTs.

The background to the bed board is a wall which is just exposed brick so that it does not interfere with the design of the bed. Some of the random shelves are for his car collection, but he can change it and do other things with it later.

In the far corner there is a mirror to amplify the amount of light we have in the room and the frame s reflects the same detail we have on the quilting of the car seat. The lighting can be modified from bright to dim lighting with just a flick of a switch to change the mood.

Since Varun was heavily inspired by music and MJ was his role model, his favorite icon MJ was painted on the door such that MJ stays with him whenever Varun i is in his room. His father, Mr Sunil Gogia, who is a spray paint artist, designed it as a tribute to his son.

The room is primarily a neutral white to grey which is essentially a background to the colour, accents in the room, like the Mondrian design on the signature Asian Paints wall. The wooden flooring from Symphony and the bright yellow King chair, also inspired by sports cars, is custom made by Surprise Home Linen.
Tips from Varun's room's makeover

• Make your room look larger and more spacious by installing a mirror near the natural source of light, such that the mirror reflects the light and the outdoors give the illusion of added space.

• Another illusion of space comes from replacing your regular sized windows with French windows, such that enough light and nature form a part of your room.

• Give your room a zen, earthy feel by using wooden flooring. Enhance it, by mounting flooring on the ceiling too. Remember to use two different colours of wood, one slightly darker and the other lighter, to prevent your room from looking monotonous and overbearing!

• A white board finishing on your wardrobe would work excellently to remind you of your to-do list for the week!

• Grey is the new black. It is emerging as a very strong trend and is the perfect colour to offset colour pops in your room. Varun's king chair would simply be a loud yellow seat if not for its grey elements.
