  How to Travel Green
NDTV Good Times

Next time you plan a vacation, think of Going Green.

Give our lonely planet a break. The Earth is our only address. She is a bubble of blue air in the blackness of Space.

She sustains us but how much can she take: Global warming, climate change, dwindling fossil fuels, our growing Carbon Footprint and the Ozone Hole...

Be kind to the environment. Make your next holiday, Earth-friendly.
Here's what “you” can do...

Pick a Green Hotel, resort or lodge. You can research online to find environment-friendly hotels

Take the most Eco-Friendly transport to your destination
Remember, it takes millions of years to naturally produce Fossil Fuels like Petrol, Gas and Coal

We use billions of gallons of oil every year. But it takes millions of years to replace it

Avoid Planes and Cars as much as you can. They are the worst. They drink up fuel and cough up deadly Carbon Dioxide or CO2 which is one of the evil Greenhouse Gases

Did you know a molecule of Carbon Dioxide stays airborne for more than a century?
It may take up to one year for one tree to fix the amount of CO2 found in 3 litres of gas!

Opt for the lesser evil: Trains, Ship, River Boat. Or that Hybrid Car, Biofuel Bus, Bike or use local transport

If the plane is unavoidable, Travel Light. Less cargo or luggage Saves Gas. Same goes for a car, less weight means less gallons of gas

Save Trees. Trees absorb a key Greenhouse Gas: Carbon Dioxide from the air.
Go Paperless by downloading tickets, maps, travel guides, boarding passes to a handheld device. Consider podcasted tours and itineraries

Green Hotels follow Green Practices:

Green Hotels Save Water and Energy

They are likely to have: Low-flow toilets and shower-heads, and toilet-tank fill diverters

They encourage Towel and Sheet Reuse.
If you request to not have your bed sheets changed daily, you can help save up to 30 gallons of water

Instead of plastic or paper, they Provide Reusable Items such as cloth napkins, glass cups, ceramic dishes

They Recycle. They provide separate recycle baskets for newspaper, white paper, glass, plastic, aluminum etc

They Save Electricity by use of motion-activated lights or compact fluorescent light bulbs

They Buy Organic, locally-grown food or Plant an Organic Garden to provide fresh produce for their guests

They Don't Waste Food. When food waste rots it produces Methane, a Greenhouse Gas that's 20 times more harmful than Carbon Dioxide

Green Hotels Donate Leftover Food to a local nonprofit organisation or Use it in a Compost Bin

They Clean Green. Which means they use nontoxic or least-toxic cleaners, sanitisers, paints, pesticides

What You can Do

As a 21st-century traveller ask, “What can I do for my Planet?” Just simple little things...

When you leave your hotel room, Turn off the Lights, TV and AC

Take Short Showers
and save water

Don't Trash

Take home souvenirs that will Benefit the Community you visit, like locally produced honey or hot sauce, crafts or jewellery made by local artisans

Don't buy typical souvenirs like t-shirts as they are often manufactured thousands of miles from your vacation spot

Now that's how you begin to have a Happy Green Holiday!
