The first Indian film to ever be a nominee in the Best Foreign Language Film category at the Oscars was Mehboob Khan's
Mother India.
The film, starring Nargis, Sunil Dutt and Rajkumar was nominated in the year 1957, along with
The Devil Came at Night, from the Federal Republic of Germany West,
Gates of Paris, from France,
The Nights of Cabiria, from Italy and
Nine Lives, from Norway.
The Nights of Cabiria won the award that year.
