In 1992, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences conferred the Lifetime Achievement Award on Satyajit Ray.

Ray, who was ailing at the moment, could not make it to the ceremony, but the Academy made special arrangements to send Audrey Hepburn, Ray's favourite actress to Kolkata, to represent them and give him the award.
