In 2001, more than a decade after the nomination of Salaam Bombay, came Lagaan that was nominated in the same category.

The other nominees that year were, Amelie from France, Elling, from Norway, Son of the Bride, from Argentina and No Man's Land from Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The award went to No Man's Land from Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Director Ashutosh Gowariker and producer-actor Aamir Khan had gone to Hollywood for the ceremony.

In the wake of the excitement there was some criticism that came Aamir's way as he readily agreed to go to the Oscars even though he had stated that he has a problem with awards, and usually doesn't accept them.
