Paris, a Producer's Tale
Oh Paris! In the truest sense, you are the city of romance.
Love is everywhere. On the walls, in the air even in the lovely sidewalks when evening comes.
And though I’m not a writer, if any place could inspire me to be eloquent then you pretty much have an idea about the
wonder of all wonders
One great thing about my job is I get to travel. Another, being part of extravagant events.
My trip to Paris qualifies as one of those larger than life experiences that you don't have everyday!
But having a super swank room in the InterContinental Grand and being part of the Parisian universe made me think otherwise. Albeit, for a few days!
And my affair with the city had only just begun...
I had an envious itinerary that included meeting an A-list celebrity, watching the French Open Finals, attending the Gala Dinner at a museum and shooting at the oh-so-famous Moulin Rouge!
Needless to say, my second trip to Paris had many firsts.
After all, how often do you get to meet somebody like Aishwarya Rai?!
Having interviewed many celebrities and famous faces from the fashion world in the past, to finally meet India's biggest international star, was exciting, surprising and many more adjectives!
beautiful person with
She met us as though we were a bunch of old college friends catching up on the good ol' times!
And so, with a lot of questions planned for her, my anchor for the show,
and I, were pretty excited about this rendezvous.
We had mapped out everything...Then out of the blue, the international PR poured water over our well laid plans. They stated, 10 minutes was all we’d get and that included the interview!
As a producer, let me confide that on an average our setup time can be anything from 10 minutes to 4 hours! So this seemed impossible.
Framing two beautiful women and shooting an interview for a half hour show in 10 minutes, required major manoeuvring on our part. So we came up with Plan B.
We took Aishwarya into confidence.
I won't bore you with the details. You'll have to watch our show and see for yourself, when it airs in another two weeks!
The highlight of my trip though was watching the French Open Finals at Roland Garros.
Now, I've never seen a live match and I must say, if one has a choice of a sport to watch, then what better than Tennis?
Being in the
Nadal was incredible!
And watching him win in straight sets left me thunderstruck!
It was sensational to observe, the great energy and the high levels of decorum at the stadium. Truly inspirational, it made me want to hit the tennis courts!
A perfect ending to this action-packed day was the Gala Dinner, with everyone looking their best and meeting people from all over the globe.
The evening started on an optimistic note...
However, the fancy eight course meal, which excited me initially was disappointing.
I guess we vegetarians don’t have much choice even in the 21st century or maybe it’s something at which international chefs have accepted defeat!
The only thing I could look forward to was a splash of the finest wines and a mouthful of the loveliest desserts. And of course, no one can go wrong with that, at least!
The next few days reminded me that I was here for work and not otherwise!
The hours passed by shooting at places like the Les Arts Décoratifs - Mode et textile, Moulin Rouge and shooting anchor links all over the city.
But everything had a silver lining...

While the exquisite pieces of prêt and couture at the museum stimulated me to read more on fashion of the past centuries.
However, this was not it. There was more inspiration to come, both on the sets and off it. We bumped into a crazy set of people, and taking cue from them the weather began to act crazy too!
Outstation shoots are wonderful and of course, exciting. Particularly, if the location is a visual delight.
And for a cameraman or a producer in a place like Paris, there’s a potential frame anywhere and everywhere you place the camera.
Yet, nervousness over any number of things that can go wrong including a spoilsport weather, always gets to me. And for a major part of my life, I've had to let go of my occasional atheism and pray in such situations.
Thank God for that!
As a producer, one of the cardinal sins is arriving late on interview locations.
Ironically, that’s exactly what happened to us on the last day of our Parisian stay…with one of our biggest interviews from the fashion world!
I cursed the heavens for raining cats and dogs, especially since it ensured we couldn’t catch a single cab for the 'Factory of Hermès shoot' and to top it, we had to catch a flight soon after!
It was eight in the morning and that made things more frantic.
But then, I suppose my atheism disappeared once again, when the hotel concierge managed to arrange a taxi. Honestly, I never felt happier sitting inside one!
We were way behind schedule but we managed to wrap the shoot without missing our flight! Phew, that was one day when I experienced what relief felt like.
All’s Well that Ends Well
The French Can-Can added more
ecstasy to an
already ecstatic trip!
On the last leg of our visit to this hearty city, we also learnt the story behind the famous ‘Birkin Bag’.
And as I write these lines, my mind relays from the past
to the future continuous...
The darling streets of Paris which I left behind a few weeks back, I hope to return to, soon... third time lucky!
