Posted By: Mum's the word Long before I had my kids, I remember visiting someone for lunch who had two kids. The TV was on. And there was this eerie silence from the kids the whole time. They all looked like zombies, mesmerised by what they were watching, oblivious to the world around them. It was one of those visuals that stayed with me for years. So much so that when my first one was born, I had the cartoon channel locked on our television set! And in those days, there was only one. Of course, most kids if they read this, would like to lock me up for cruelty but that’s another matter. After many more years of parenting, I have learnt that the easiest way to raise your kids is like the English do – to be seen, never heard, to plant them in front of a TV screen! It's also, as I have realised not all bad. So here’s my strategy so that I cause myself less angst. Give them TV Time when the options to do other things are few. I never allow TV on a weekend morning. Or when the sun is out and they can go out and play. Watch a bit with them and you understand why your kids sound the way they do. They pick up cultural nuances from what they watch, and they find it really cool to see their parents enjoying a good laugh with them. Lastly, at the risk of becoming very unpopular with the parent community, I end up serving some of the meals, over the weekend especially if we are not joining them for dinner, in front of the TV. You can be rest assured that with a few gentle reminders and a threat here and there, the food will be polished off! I would conclude by saying that the television spews out junk as well as stuff that could be very useful for kids to learn, presented in a fun, non-instructional manner. So let them have their pick once in a while, and who knows, maybe your little one will chance upon something called – World’s Worst Airline Disasters and will tell you minutia about the knobs and circuits in a Boeing 747!
