Delhi Couture Week- Day 5

Posted By: Ambika Anand

The last day of the Delhi Couture Week saw many known faces in the audience. Suzanne Roshan, Raveena Tandon and Sophie Chowdhary were there for designer Manav Gangwani's show. His collection seemed evolved and was divided into two parts - one was black and white and the other was red.

The fabrics used were net, velvet, lace. The silhouettes in the black and white genre included dresses, lehengas, jumpsuit, anarkalis, straight cut kurta with plunging back and short dresses with feathers. There were other variants as well for the short dresses with power shoulders and chains. Also part of the collection were sharara jumpsuit in velvet and lace and pre stitched saris with exquisite blouses.

The school of red, showcased mermaid cut dresses and lehengas.

The make up consisted of winged out eyeliner and red lips, which is a great look on the Indian skin tone.

The finale was all about Sabyasachi’s travels around the world that culminated into his 2012 couture collection.

Five cities that brought five flavors, the strait jacket discipline of New York, the classic nostalgia of the British Raj in Kolkata, the subversive decadence of Berlin, the incredible romance of Paris and the bohemian flair of Barcelona all come together to create a collection.

The different embellishment techniques include Russian needlepoint, zardozi from Agra, Kantha from Bangladesh, block printing from Bengal and Rajasthan, intricately embroidered Pashmina from Kashmir, chints from the United Kingdom that coexist with rhinestone, baubles, bows and needle craft.

One saw plain lehengas defined by Parsi work with blouses and bows. The kurtas were superbly fitted, combined with lehegas and sharars and velvet pajamas were combined with fitted kurtas. Blouses were coupled with velvet pencil skirts with embroidery. There was a play of fabrics with transparent net with embroidery over floral fabric. This combination was seen in lehengas, anarkalis and saris. The accessories were also well thought out, be it the hair bands, purses or bangles.

For those with the perfect curves, there was a straight kurta in combination with 3 fabrics – tweed, floral and sequence.

A new silhouette that we saw was a sequence blouse and skirt with churidars, to give the effect of a suit. The glam quotient to the finale came from actor Sridevi, who walked down the runway!
