A flirtation in fabric

Swishing hemlines, flowing elegance, an ethereal aura! Epithets that best describe the timeless piece of women’s clothing - skirts! Available in a riot of colours and immense variants, skirts are known for their feminine appeal.

Ankle length, calf length, minis, micro minis, you name it and you got it. Skirts come in all shapes and sizes. While long and calf length skirts give a demure, elegant look, one can rev up a party with a short skirt that sets the temperatures soaring. The current style statement ruling the roost in fashion capitals across the world are asymmetrical hemlines.

Choosing the right skirt can be quite a challenge considering that there are many factors and attributes to be kept in mind! Fabric, cut and length are the three cardinal rules for skirt purchase.

Fabrics can differ from soft, flowing chiffons and georgettes to smart denims and corduroys. Cotton is also a favourite for summers. Next we come to the most important aspect of length. While ankle length skirts make one look tall and willowy, calf length skirts look best on people with a slightly heavy and petite frame. If you have the legs to die for then short skirts are the way to go.

Cut of a skirt is very essential in order to optimize the natural advantages of one’s specific body type. For instance, fish cuts are a strict no for people with heavy built. Ghagra or umbrella cut skirts look best on thin frames, while A line skirts suit almost everybody. Couple the right skirt with a dollop of attitude and voila, you have it right!

Right footwear goes along way in complementing your look in skirts. My personal preferred choices are slinky, flat sandals that make even my big-feet look passably good!

My affair with this flirty garment is a recent one. Usually a mundane and a conventional dresser, I had little faith in my ability to look good in skirts. Being also a prude, I found the short ones interesting yet blasphemous to my Victorian sensibilities!!! Then there was light!

I discovered quite by accident that I can manage to look neat enough in calf length skirts. And when coupled with just the right top and footwear, even impressive!

So take my word and invest in a skirt that best defines you and one that you are comfortable in. Who knows this might be the last straw to turn you from a fashion victim to a style diva!!!
