Where the world stops rotating…
Posted By: Ipshita Bhattacharya
Yes... it is all about location, location and location. Not just in case of realty but also in the Indian wedding scene. Getting married in the neighbourhood park is not considered hip any more. Destination weddings are fast catching up with moolah magnets and the trend is here to stay. Depending on your pocket size, the destinations can range from the old favourite Goa to South of France. What had been a whim of the rich and famous has in recent times become accessible to more and more couples looking to add an "exotic twist" to their special day.
Within the country, one can choose from a galore of options. A white wedding on the beaches of Goa, a flirtation with nature in the back waters of Kerala, a royal treatment in Rajasthan or escape the summer heat and get married in one of the scenic locales of Himachal.
But the pomp and the splendour has its own price. The families involved usually end up spending quite a fortune. Right from airfare to hotel accommodation for the guests, decor and other basic logistics of organising a wedding. All this can easily drive you up against the wall... but fret not. This is where wedding planners come handy. They literally cater to all your needs and worries.
And as the wedding season is peaks... the wedding planners find tough competition in the market. So each one is armed to out do other. Getting the right stars to perform for the guests to innovative strategies of organising an underwater wedding... there is no stopping the creativity.
But what do the clients usually look for? Most weddings that I have attended, as the producer of the Big Fat Indian Wedding show... have turned out to be more or less similar to each other. Shaimak Davar's troupe almost seemed to be a constant factor. And then there are the usual foreign guests who are completely overwhelmed by the choreographed performances. And then... there are also the other guests, who try their best to feel a part of the celebration but then this is not really their cup of tea (or should I say glass of
lassi
).
So, who are these extravagant weddings for? And who is really having a great time attending them? I leave it to you guys to figure that out and if you do come up with something then let me know.
But, if you are one of the lucky set invited to these extravagant affairs... don’t think twice. Just pack your bags and set out for a quick vacation (fully paid for!!)
