Not just cosmetic fitness

Posted By: Ayesha Sharma

In the few months that I have anchored a fitness show, I have realised that the pursuit of 'Fitness' is split down the middle into two distinct camps. There is the first markedly larger camp that pursues fitness purely for aesthetic value and the second smaller set of health-seekers.

Weight loss, is by far the largest motivator that draws people to physical activity, and the achievability of this goal varies so drastically in body and mind that it takes super human effort to keep it in check.

I have seen friends and acquaintances swing in and out of gyms and diets their whole life, never entirely satisfied, always berating themselves for the unachievable goals they set.

The fight begins within us. A battle royale - body versus mind, where the body calls the shots for the residents of the first camp. Unfortunately for the body though, it has a huge handicap, it can be easily tricked by the mind.

The thing to do is logically, consciously switch your allegiance to the second camp - The HEALTH seekers. A healthy conscience drives itself and it's much easier to stay motivated at a task you are achieving good results at.

It doesn't matter how insipid your workout is, exercising your limbs will always leave you with a sense of wellbeing. Soon this will become addictive and your body will crave it much like it craves chocolate at night ;)

Losing weight, body conditioning, toning must be moved to the bottom of the list of priorities with exercise, sports and healthy food taking up the top slots. You will be surprised at how swiftly and effortlessly the bottom rewards follow the top priorities.

Fitness is a state of mind - agreed. But it must become a subconscious state of mind where being fit is incidental to your lifestyle. This is absolutely achievable but remember your mind must be convinced well before you step onto a treadmill because the body follows the cues from your head.
