India is known for a lot of culinary delights, the national trope used for ages has been our spices, our herbs, our dishes. Not to say that we Indians don't enjoy the elaborate decadent fare, but every now and then we indulge in some tangy, spicy, sweet chaat. The street food of India is a hallmark to how versatile we can be with our food. And why not? Everything is so absolutely delicious!

Here are some of the best of the lot, especially during this time of the year.

1) Lassi

Who doesn't like something chilled and sweet during the sweltering summer season? Lassi is our best option to satiate this urge! Homemade or otherwise, it's a very popular drink, especially in North India. You can whip up your own concoction with some mangoes, some berries, etc. Trust us, it's so much better than some aerated drink, plus super healthy. Add a bit of turmeric and it'll even help you with digestion!

2) Imarti

This is essentially a sweeter, more plump and indulgent version of the twisty jalebi. One of the most popular sweets known to us, it's delicious and a perfect end to any meal. Best accompanied with some kachoris, and chutney - your taste buds will be really thankful after a mouthful of this delicacy!

3) Kulfi

For most of our childhood, summer holidays meant waiting it out endlessly during afternoon for the kulfiwala. Yum milky and sweet kulfis were our favourite dessert snack. We could mop up 2-3 in one go, and ever since the trend has just progressed. Summers are now all about the tangy and sweet mango kulfi which is served everywhere from a food cart to a restaurant. You don't want to miss this!

4) Butter Chicken and Kebab

If you are wandering aimlessly for hours around a market that is tucked away in a far off place in the city, you can't possibly just survive on some snacks. Sooner than later your stomach will grumble and you will need a proper meal. There are scores of small dhabas tucked away around areas that target street-shoppers. Have some naan, butter chicken/ paneer, some kebabs and you will feel absolutely on top of the world. Plus the rest of your shopping trip will help you walk off all the calories!

5) Aloo Tikki

This is the quintessential chaat. It's spicy, it's tangy, it's sweet, there is curd, there are potatoes, and there are spices! It's a total package. Perfect for winters and summers alike, this is easy to eat, but more filling than your average street dish. Tikkis are of a crispy and soft texture, which works perfectly well with dollops of dahi, some choley, and garnished with tamarind chutney and onions. We are literally salivating at the thought of this now! Yes, it is indeed that yum!

6) Bhelpuri

If you don't want to be too adventurous while venturing out and eating, your best bet is bhelpuri. It's light, it doesn't include too many ingredients that can lead to indigestion, and it can be altered to your taste buds and be prepared too spicy or otherwise. This is also one of those street foods that is emulated in some version across the country. The best part however of this is the lightness, and that unlike most chaat, it's not fried or dripping with grease!
