CUSTOM MADE FOR VIR SANGHVI

What is real luxury? I’ll tell you what it’s not. It’s not about brands and designers. It’s about quality, about craftsmanship, about pieces that are made by hand and not mass produced in factories.

India is the home of luxury, you have the best craftsmen who will make anything you want specially for you. And they will make it much cheaper than any mass produced designer item.

My show CUSTOM MADE is about Indian luxury. About how you can get the best at your doorstep, about how it doesn’t have to cost the earth. What’s more you can get it made to your own specifications, you can get it Custom Made.

When you think of fragrance and bespoke fragrance, about the last place you can think of are the streets of Old Delhi. But they have been making perfume here for centuries.
Queens, kings, commoners, peasants, merchants, they have all shopped here and the extraordinary thing is that so many of these shops are pretty much exactly as they were centuries ago.

India has always been famous for perfumes, these days however, it's mixed with the West Asian tradition of Ittar. The shop I am going to in Chandani Chowk, has been here since 1816. It's been run by one family in all those years.

This shop is different because it understands fresh fragrances and the art of western blending to create bespoke perfumes.

Mukul Gandhi its owner has fragrance in his blood. My idea is to get Mr Gandhi to use his amazing fragrance essences to create a perfume specially for me. A bespoke fragrance that is Indian and international at the same time.

While commercial fragrances are meant to appeal to the largest number, this fragrance is blended specially for me…

This is actually how all fragrances are made, perfumers blend various essences to arrive at a sort of cocktail that is right for the customer.

You know I fancy myself as a fragrance junkie, so a bespoke fragrance has to be absolutely right.

I am clear about what I want: A base of Vetiver or Khas, a little Khewda to give it an Indian touch, Sandalwood to give it a woody note and Bergamot for a masculine citrus top note.

It only costs Rs 450 or $10. I have to give it a name...this is my 'Summer Khas'. So there it is, my own perfume, my own smell with high quality ingredients and a personal blend.
