STAYING ALIVE IN BOLLYWOOD
You may have experienced those perky 'rise and shine' days, when you are happy for no good reason? Then you crash like a falling star the very next day! Ever wonder why you go from boom to bust?
The answer may lie on your plate and not waking up on the wrong side of the bed or a fit of hormonal furies.
“Food not only affects you physically, to lose weight, to get into a more muscular or leaner shape but it also affects you mentally which is very important.
What you eat and at what time is very important because it will affect your mood or performance at that meeting you're going to,” says nutritionist Leena Mogre.
So watch what you eat. We don't want you grinning ear to ear at a funeral or get into a tiff with the 'Mrs' or throwing the choicest epithets at your boss!
“It’s scientifically proven that the food you eat affects the chemical composition of your brain. Hence, you are happy, sad, depressed, more alert or feeling energetic. It's the nutrients in the food called precursors that affect a person’s mood.
Carbohydrates make you feel happy and energetic. If you are on a very high protein diet you may be irritable because your brain is not getting enough sugar,” says Mogre.
Actress Meghna Naidu feels that your endorphin-high or deep blues may be triggered by “mood food.”
The nutritionist explains, “The food we eat alters the production of neurotransmitters which are the chemical messengers that transfer messages from the brain, from nerve to nerve or cell to cell.”
“Like if you get a feeling, 'I’m full, I don’t want to eat any more.' Or 'I feel like eating a batata vada,' that is appetite - it is the neurotransmitters working and sending messages that affect your behaviour pattern.”
In sync with the swings of mood food, Meghna favours a protein-rich starter of chicken, mushroom, fish and spinach. She then rounds it off with a sweet splurge.
“I think proteins are very good to keep your energy levels high. Sweets fall in the category of ‘happy food’. It is said chocolates increase the level of endorphins in your brain and acts as an anti-depressant.”
So people watch that mood and what's on your plate.
