THE WARRIOR TRIBES OF NAGALAND (Neha Dixit)

Friday: 4.30 pm

Visitors to Nagaland are quite informed about the region. And meeting fellow travellers can give you new windows to explore.

The Touphema tourist village draws both the first timer and the experienced traveller to spend a night or two in Kohima district.

A cheerful new gateway welcomes you into a doll house like settlement. Small huts with sloping roofs, all in a row with wooden cut outs of popular Naga motifs: The rooster, the mithun head, spears, the sun and the moon.

At first impression, the thatched roofs, wooden structure and a log for lock didn’t look very promising in terms of creature comforts.

But inside, lay a happy surprise. Simple, basic comforts with everything I needed for a good night’s stay.

The sights from my brightly painted window were luring...So I stepped outside.
Hoping to meet a few more travellers, I found that I was the only one around, Well almost! And as I wandered around my new surroundings, I came across a few friendly children peeping back at me with the same curiosity…

No matter how diverse Nagaland maybe, I found that at every village I was welcomed by a beautiful gate.

A gate here is more than a tribe’s identity. It carries a bold message for everyone coming through. A message that says, “Now that you have entered the gates of Nagaland you will be protected by us.”
